Little Devil Teemo

Fan-Art Demo Project | responsible for all aspects

As a longtime fan of the game developer Riot Games, I wanted to realize a small character with this project using Maya, Zbrush, Xgen, Substance Painter and Arnold. After the first blogout in Zbrush, the character was retopologized and unwrapped in Maya. Then some details, e.g. the horns, were sculpted in Zbrush and then baked and textured using Substance Painter. Since the references were based on a line drawing and there was no other comparable cinematic of the character, collecting enough references for realistic horns in the animal area or fur gradients were extremely important. At the same time, the fur was made in Xgen, which led to small problems with the hardware in the final render, so that this project is also the impetus for future tests in software such as Houdini.

Little Devil Teemo

Demoproject – responsible for all aspects

1/3

The first use of Xgen for creating fur in 3D was an intriguing but challenging experience. Xgen, a tool within Maya, allowed artists to generate realistic fur by grooming and scattering hair on a 3D surface.

The initial results were visually impressive, showcasing a new level of detail and realism in character design. However, the process was also problematic. Managing complex hair systems required significant computational power, and rendering the fur was time-consuming and resource-intensive.

Even though the reel doesn’t have an animation, I also tried to rig the character, but this led to problems because the fur didn’t follow the mesh in the rendering.
